Hot Faces: How a Driver Gets Itself Banned
A driver is non-conforming if its face is too springy. The limit is a Characteristic Time (CT) of 239 microseconds, with an 18-microsecond test tolerance, so 257µs is the real ceiling. For clubs other than drivers, the older COR limit of 0.830 still applies. Exceed either and the club is non-conforming — legal to own, not permitted in competition.

Why a springy face is worth regulating
Hit a ball with a rigid plate and the ball does all the deforming. Energy is lost squashing it. Hit it with a thin, flexible face and the face deforms too — then snaps back, returning energy to the ball instead of wasting it.
That is the trampoline effect, and it is free distance. Left unregulated, manufacturers would keep making faces thinner and hotter until driving distance detached entirely from skill. So it is capped.
How the cap is measured
Two methods, used on different clubs.
Characteristic Time (CT) applies to drivers. The clubhead is fixed in a pendulum rig, a small steel mass is swung into the face, and instruments record how long the two stay in contact. The answer comes back in microseconds. Springier face, longer contact, higher number.
The limit is 239 microseconds. Because the measurement has real-world variance, an 18-microsecond tolerance is permitted. A club is therefore only ruled non-conforming above 257µs — which is why you will see both numbers quoted, and why 257 is the one that decides outcomes.
Coefficient of Restitution (COR) is the older standard, introduced in 1998 with a limit of 0.830. It fires balls at the face from an air cannon and compares ball speed out to clubhead speed in. It still governs fairway woods, hybrids and irons, where CT testing is not used.
The two measure the same underlying property by different means. CT won for drivers because it is faster and does not require a cannon.
How drivers actually end up illegal
Three routes, and only one is deliberate.
Manufacturing variance. Faces are made to a tolerance. A model can be designed at 245µs and have individual heads scatter either side. Most manufacturers deliberately target a few microseconds under the limit to leave headroom — which costs them a little distance and buys them certainty.
Face creep. Titanium fatigues. A driver hit thousands of times can gain CT as the face loosens. This is the most common way a tour player arrives at a championship with a driver that was conforming when it was built and is not conforming that week. It happened publicly to Rory McIlroy at the 2025 PGA Championship, and it is a routine finding in tour equipment testing rather than a scandal.
Deliberate design. Some manufacturers build past the limit on purpose and say so. Krank’s Formula 11 is the best-known example — the face is intentionally hotter than the Rules permit, sold openly to golfers who do not play competitively.
What this means for you
If you bought your driver new from a major manufacturer, it was almost certainly built to conform — the major brands submit their intended-conforming models for evaluation, and the USGA publishes the resulting list. That is a strong prior, not a guarantee: submission is a manufacturer’s choice, conformance is specific to model and loft, and an individual head can be altered or drift out of spec. Verify the exact model and loft on the official list if it matters.
The practical questions are narrower:
- Playing a round under the Rules, or posting a handicap score? Your driver must conform. Check it against the official list.
- Purely social game, no score posted? A non-conforming driver is lawful to own and fine by agreement with your partners.
- Bought a used driver of uncertain provenance? Worth checking, particularly if the face has visible wear or the club carries an unfamiliar name.
One honest caveat on the upside: the distance difference between a conforming face at 255µs and a non-conforming one at 270µs is a few yards, not the transformation the marketing implies. The face is one variable among many, and for most amateurs it is not the limiting one.
The rule that governs which list matters
Model Local Rule G-1, which requires drivers to appear on the conforming list, is recommended only for competitions restricted to highly skilled players. For everyday club golf, the requirement is simply that your club conforms to the Rules — not that it appears on a specific published list.

What does CT actually measure?
How long the ball stays in contact with the clubface at impact, measured in microseconds. The longer the contact, the more the face flexes and springs back, and the faster the ball leaves. It is a proxy for how trampoline-like the face is.
Is 257 or 239 the real limit?
Both, in different senses. 239µs is the written limit. Because measurement is imprecise, an 18µs tolerance is allowed, so a club only fails when it tests above 257µs. In practice, 257 is the number that matters.
Why does COR still exist if CT replaced it?
CT is only used for drivers. Fairway woods, hybrids and irons are still tested with the air cannon method against the 0.830 COR limit.
Can a legal driver become illegal over time?
Yes. Faces can creep hotter with repeated use as the material fatigues. This is exactly how tour players end up with non-conforming drivers they bought as conforming.
Does this affect my weekend golf?
It depends on what kind of weekend golf. In a purely social game where nobody is playing under the Rules and no score is posted, a non-conforming driver is fine by agreement. In any round played under the Rules — including a friendly one you intend to post — it does not conform, and the score is generally not acceptable for handicap purposes.
